The city as we now know it really began to take shape in the 17th Century, when it became an important shipping port and the mercantile hub of an empire, built on slavery, commerce and emigration and serving British colonies. It was second only to London in terms of importance. English, Scottish, Irish, and Russians all set sail from the Mersey's docks to find a better life in Australia or the USA. Liverpool was also the port of entry for migrants from Britain's far-flung colonies, and the resulting Caribbean, Indian and Chinese communities that developed made it one of Britain's first multicultural cities Although the docks have been in decline for some years, the city is fortunate to have retained a number of its fine Victorian dockside buildings. Many of these have now been developed and put to good use. The Albert Dock is now Liverpool’s prime visitor attraction and is the largest group of Grade 1-listed buildings in Britain. The Tate Liverpool houses the National Collection of Modern Art, and is the largest gallery of modern and contemporary art outside London. Along with the Lady Lever Art Gallery and the nearby Walker Art Gallery, with their prized collections of Pre-Raphaelite art, they make Liverpool one of Europe’s top cities. Other relics from a by-gone era but which still add to the city’s charm are the landmark Liver, Cunard and Port of Liverpool buildings from where ships were directed to all corners of the globe. The enormous redbrick Liverpool Cathedral is quite unlike any other. Built between 1902 and 1978, only St Peter's and the cathedrals of Milan and Seville are larger. Liverpool suffered greatly as a result if its declining industry, but part of the unique character of its people is that they are survivors, and they still know how enjoy themselves. Providing great distraction from its woes, Liverpool’s two greatest modern day exports are The Beatles, and football. On the first Saturday in April the nation's eyes and ears focus on Liverpool's famous Aintree racecourse, where the gruelling Grand National takes place.
